What to Know Before Designing a Cold Storage Room

Oct. 09, 2022

There are certain parameters that must be determined before building a cold store. These parameters must be determined precisely in order to allow the systems and installations to work efficiently for many years and to avoid increased energy consumption. The size of the cold room is determined by the required capacity, the topography, and the state of the partition.

1. Cold storage site selection

Attention must be paid to the location of the cold store. Firstly, the decision has to be made based on its own operating conditions. In the case of rental cold stores, for example, the location of the cold storage needs to take into account the surrounding market prospects and accessibility.

2. Cold storage room temperature

The same cold storage size, the lower the cold storage temperature, the higher the cold storage price.

◇ High-temperature cold storage design temperature (-2~8°C)

◇ Medium temperature cold storage design temperature (-10~-23°C)

◇ Low-temperature cold storage design temperature (-23~-30°C)

◇Ultra-low temperature cold storage design temperature (-30~-80°C)

3. Cold storage volume

Different goods require different cold storage volumes. Generally, our vegetables are calculated at 5 to 7 cubic meters per tonne. Frozen meat is calculated at 4 cubic meters per tonne, which is also related to the layout of the shelves in the cold store.

4. Refrigeration unit selection

Refrigeration capacity and refrigeration capacity of the cold storage refrigeration unit is calculated according to the maximum heat load of the goods, the quality of the refrigeration unit is very important, good quality and reasonable selection will have a great impact on energy consumption.

5. Number of rooms to be built in the warehouse

The number of rooms can be determined by the speed and quantity of the products to be circulated. If the rooms are too large, they will take longer to unload, or too small to increase the initial investment costs.

6. Geographical conditions of the cold storage construction site

External weather conditions, relative humidity, and other factors are important for the correct calculation of the cooling load determined for the products to be counted in the warehouse.

7. Type of cold storage construction

Cold rooms can be made of reinforced concrete or steel construction. The room must be insulated to reduce the absorption of heat from the floor, walls, and ceiling.

8. Door type

The formation and cost of heat are one of the determining factors for the doors in a cold store. Therefore, the correct type of door must be chosen.

  • Sliding door: used as a door to the cold room. It must be at a height and width through which a forklift truck can pass.

  • Impact doors: Used at corridor crossings in the transition from commercial areas to warehouse spaces.

  • Sectional door: used to separate the outside area from the processing or loading area.

9. Types of products to be stored

Only one type of product can be stored in each room of the warehouse. Different products can be stored together if they are in airtight packaging and the storage temperatures match.

10. Product storage temperature and relative humidity

When designing a cold storage room, calculations are made according to the type of product to be stored. Incorrectly selected temperatures can lead to shorter storage and shelf life.

11. Product entry temperature

In order to determine the cooling capacity, it is important to know at what temperature the products are delivered to the warehouse.

12. The daily amount of product warehoused

Depending on the number of incoming products; determine forklifts, number of employees, trucks, truck parking areas, etc.

13. Type of product packaging

Depending on the type of storage of the product; cartons, parcels, pallets, chassis, and stacked can be stored.
