Types of Condensers

Jun. 02, 2022

A condenser is a device that liquefies a gas by cooling it. In HVAC equipment, the hot discharge gas (refrigerant vapor) from the compressor enters the condenser coil at the top and is condensed and discharged from the condenser to a receiver located near the bottom. The condenser coil is located in the condensing unit along with the compressor and control unit. In remote or split air conditioning installations, the condensing unit is located outdoors. Condensers are available in a variety of sizes and designs, including plain tube, finned tube and plate, series, and parallel units.

Condensers are classified by their cooling method. The three main types of condensers can be broken down as follows

Air-cooled condensers

Combined air-cooled and water-cooled condensers

Water-cooled condensers

Air-cooled condensers

Air-cooled condensers consist of an ample circle of surfaces where the air is blown by a fan or caused by natural ventilation. This type of condenser is commonly used for small-capacity refrigeration units. It is mainly designed for residential or small office air conditioning.

The air-cooled condenser in refrigeration should be kept away from dust, lint, and other foreign matter, as they tend to reduce airflow around the ducts and fins if they are allowed to accumulate like evaporators.

Copeland Box Type Air-Cooled Compressor Unit runs excellently with several step inspections which prove extremely restorative in conserving energy. It is presented with a failure caution and inquiry function allowing users to have control over its performance. In addition to the aforementioned facts, it owns an advantage over various other compressors as it begets adjustable fan motion with inhaling overheat of 10 ⁰C. Besides, it ensures extensive cooling potential with storage temperature bouncing between -20~10 ⁰C.

This Copeland Box Type Air-Cooled Compressor Unit with all measurements and parts is compatible with R404A refrigerant. Please contact us if you need a compressor unit for other refrigerants.

Combination air-cooled and water-cooled condensers

This type of condenser, also known as an evaporative condenser, consists of a coil that is cooled by spraying water from above, and then cold air enters from the bottom and blows through the coil. As the water evaporates from the coil, it creates a cooling effect that causes the refrigerant in the coil to condense. The refrigerant gas in the coil is hot and becomes liquid by the combination of the sprayed water and the large column of moving air provided by the fan. The unevaporated water is recirculated through a pump.

Water-cooled condenser

Water-cooled condensers are similar to steam surface condensers because cooling is accomplished individually by water circulation through a tube or coil enclosed in a housing. In a water-cooled condenser, the refrigerant circulates through an annular space between the tubes or coils. Due to their construction, water-cooled condensers are also called double-tube condensers.

Since evaporative condensers do not waste water, large compressors can be installed in areas where water is scarce. Tests have shown that the amount of water required per ton of cooling does not exceed 0.03 GPM. This is one of the reasons for using this type of condenser for environmental reasons. Evaporative condensers also eliminate water handling problems and provide the most economical way to cool standard air conditioning refrigerant gases.
